Children drown in rivers.
Car wrecks claim lives.
Cancer claims friends, relatives and coworkers.
Earthquakes strike. So do tornadoes. Tsunamis. Lightning-caused wildfires.
Freak accidents and unexpected illnesses lurk around every corner.
The world holds plenty of misery all on its very own. So why – WHY – do we humans insist on purposely adding to the load?
Be gentle with one another today. That is all.

If there had been ONE good person in that theater carrying a gun, most, if not all, of those killings and injuries would have been prevented. If a decent percentage of the population carried a gun and knew how to use it in defense of themselves and other innocent peopple, perhaps the killer would not have even tried such a stunt. More restrictions on gun ownership only prevents the good people from defending themselves. You cannot have enough security to prevent such an outrage. The schools all now have protection, but the killer now goes to the theater. Where next? The ONLY defense is more armed good people, willing and able to protect the innocent. God Bless America. Freedom is not Free.

Respectfully, Joan, I don’t think so, not in this case. I have no problem with the Second Amendment, nor with an armed populace, generally speaking. But this man was wearing protective gear and a helmet, the theater was dark and filled with smoke, and people were running and shouting and screaming. I think extra gunfire, no matter how well-intentioned, would simply have resulted in extra victims.
As I understand it, several of the people in that theater were members of the armed forces in one way or another, and while I’m guessing they weren’t packing, if anyone would have been able to get a jump on this guy, they would have. The fact that they weren’t able to tells me the average Joe or Jane, armed or not, would have been just as caught by surprise.
I don’t believe extra legislation – whether for more guns or fewer – will ever be able to eliminate the Crazy Human factor.

Joan, perhaps you’ve forgotten head-to-toe body armor shooter was wearing. Your audience marksman would have had to have been very “good,” ESP among all the teargas in the dark.

I think there is something to be said by your commenter as well as by you in the Blog. And God knows we have enough to fear in general.
